Photographer Charles Abel is bringing an exhibit to Wistariahurst Museum’s Gallery that shows visitors a view of Holyoke they’ve never seen before. Pictorally Speaking features cameras from Wistariahurst’s archive alongside photos Abel has taken of Holyoke. Abel captures views of modern-day Holyoke from a historical perspective- literally.
About his process, Abel says, “I saw the 5x7 field camera, and I knew that was the one. After cleaning the camera and testing it for light-leaks, I made a few sample images to get a feel for the camera…In the end, this series of photographs is a combination of modern documentary images taken in
the Pictorialist style with a 100-year-old camera and 125-year-old lens.”
Museum Director Megan Seiler looks forward to this exhibit, saying, “We get to look at the present through the past’s lens.”
Wistariahurst welcomes visitors to the opening reception of Pictorally Speaking on August 3rd, 2026, from 4:30-6:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on view through September 8th, 2026, during open gallery hours, Mondays, 10:00 am-2:00 pm, and Tuesdays, 4:30-6:30 pm.
About the Artist:
Charles (Chuck) Abel is currently working as a Librarian at the Chicopee Public Library.
He also teaches a Photographic Archives class for Simmons University as an Adjunct
Professor. He plans to continue to photograph, as he has done for the past 35 years, Holyoke and the
Pioneer Valley.
Abel also worked as a newspaper photographer for 25 years, starting at the Holyoke Transcript and then the Springfield Newspapers. He was the Photo Editor for the Daily Hampshire Gazette for 10 years. Abel has an MFA in Photography from the University of Hartford and a Masters of Library and Information Science from Simmons University.

El fotógrafo Charles Abel presenta una exposición en la galería del Museo Wistariahurst que muestra a los visitantes una visión de Holyoke que nunca antes habían visto. «Pictorally Speaking» reúne cámaras del archivo de Wistariahurst junto con fotografías de Holyoke tomadas por Abel. Abel captura imágenes de la Holyoke actual desde una perspectiva histórica —literalmente—.
Sobre su proceso, Abel afirma: «Vi la cámara de campo de 5x7 y supe que era la indicada. Tras limpiarla y comprobar que no hubiera fugas de luz, hice unas cuantas fotos de prueba para familiarizarme con ella… Al final, esta serie de fotografías es una combinación de imágenes documentales modernas tomadas al
estilo pictorialista con una cámara de 100 años y un objetivo de 125 años».
La directora del museo, Megan Seiler, espera con ilusión esta exposición y afirma: «Podemos contemplar el presente a través de la lente del pasado».
Wistariahurst da la bienvenida a los visitantes a la recepción inaugural de «Pictorally Speaking» el 3 de agosto de 2026, de 16:30 a 18:30. Este evento es gratuito y abierto al público. La exposición permanecerá abierta hasta el 8 de septiembre de 2026, durante el horario de apertura de la galería: los lunes, de 10:00 a 14:00, y los martes, de 16:30 a 18:30.

Charles (Chuck) Abel trabaja actualmente como bibliotecario en la Biblioteca Pública de Chicopee.
También imparte una asignatura sobre archivos fotográficos en la Universidad de Simmons como profesor adjunto. Tiene previsto seguir fotografiando, como ha hecho durante los últimos 35 años, Holyoke y el Pioneer Valley.
Abel también trabajó como fotógrafo de prensa durante 25 años, primero en el Holyoke Transcript y después en los Springfield Newspapers.
